Giovinazzi: Formula E is not the best series for a beginner

Antonio Giovinazzi is making his debut season in Formula E and according to the Italian, the electric series is absolutely unlike any other form of racing.

After three seasons with Alfa Romeo in Formula 1, the Swiss team decided to replace him with the promising Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou and Giovinazzi moved to the World Electric Car Championship, where he drives for the Dragon Penske team.

After 12 stages, Antonio takes the last, 22nd place and has not a single point to his name.

“Unfortunately the cars here are completely different and the size,” he complained in an interview with the Independent. – Everything is different, everything is different from what I’ve studied in the past in other categories and in Formula 1. Nothing I can do works here!

Here it is necessary not to slow down so much, and in general the psychological approach should be different, because in the course of the race one should not attack, but save energy and recharge the battery. Everything is completely different. Although, to be honest, this was one of the reasons why I wanted to drive in Formula E: I wanted to learn something new, because I’ve driven different cars over the course of my career, only Formula E was missing.

It turned out that this is a completely different world, and for a beginner this is not the most suitable championship, because you have very little time to adapt: you only drive half an hour in training on an unknown track. It’s hard to sort everything out these days. And in Berlin I had to perform two days of the weekend on two different tracks – not to say they were difficult, but they had to be remembered, and there we were distinguished by speed.

In addition to racing in Formula E, Giovinazzi is still a test driver for Ferrari and will work in the simulator for the second half of the season after the electric car racing championship is over to help the Formula 1 team.

When Antonio was asked if he would like to return to F1, he replied: “We’ll see. Never say never and I don’t know yet what I’ll do next year, but I hope it shows soon. For now I’m concentrating on the preparation for the next Formula E races, of which there are very few left, but we will see.

I don’t have anything to say yet, but when the championship ends I will think about what I want to do in 2023 and try to make the best choice. Especially in the electric series, I like the atmosphere for the races and urban circuits. When you race in other categories you don’t have the opportunity to race in New York, Rome, London and in this respect everything is great. Off the track in Formula E it is much quieter, less stressful than in F1, so there is a difference there too.

Next month will be the final races of Formula E and in the second part of the season I will be concentrating on working on the Formula 1 simulator and making plans for next year.
