Last year, Red Bull Racing won all but one race of the season. The technical director of the championship team, Pierre Vache, explained this not only by the advantage of the RB19 car, but also by the fact that the rivals performed worse than their capabilities.
Pierre Vache: “We did well, but I wouldn’t say we did anything outstanding. We identified many weaknesses in the 2022 car and simply corrected them in the RB19. We could not solve all the problems, but the team managed to eliminate the weaknesses and achieve results on the track.
The advantage of our car is partly due to the weakness of our rivals: we did not expect to be ahead alone. I mean that in 2023, compared to 2022, some not only did not improve, but on the contrary took steps back.
Of course I am not detracting from what we have achieved; the team did a great job, but in comparison we learned everything. If our rivals had forced us into a close fight, people would have said we didn’t have such a good car. That’s what I mean.”
Speaking about the RB20 car for the 2024 season, Vacher noted that the engineers tried to eliminate the shortcomings of its predecessor: “Of course we can take a step forward with the RB20.
Max Verstappen has repeatedly said that our ability to attack curbs and slow corners is not the most excellent compared to some other teams. Clearly this is an area we want to improve.”
