Alonso: The balance of power changes at every stage

Fernando Alonso scored no points in the previous two races of the season in Jeddah and Melbourne. The Alpine rider is confident that he can finish in the top ten in the upcoming round at Imola.

Q: The car’s speed looked promising in Australia, but you were unlucky. Tell us how the last leg went?
Fernando Alonso: Sunday we were unlucky due to a problem in the qualifying final, so the result was not what we wanted. The car as a whole was fast and on Saturday I was counting on a high result. My round in the final was fast enough to compete for the top three. It’s a shame I couldn’t finish the circle, which was my best for the weekend at the time.

The team did a fantastic job getting the car back in time for the race, but it was difficult after starting from tenth place as overtaking in Melbourne is not easy. We used an alternative strategy that ruined the safety car. It was frustrating to finish last because I think we deserved more that weekend. Must go ahead and try again in Imola!

Q: Will Alpine be able to compete for high positions in Imola?
Fernando Alonso: It’s hard to say for sure, because this season at every stage the power ratios change slightly due to the high density. We have demonstrated a fairly stable speed on three different tracks, which can be considered a positive signal. The team knows that this season will be a serious upgrade race. There are still 20 stages to go, so everyone has a lot of time to regain points in the championship.

Q: Are you excited about the first sprint of the season?
Esteban OconA: Yes, because he can change the balance of power. Last year we saw that the sprint format worked very well. For example, I really liked the podium at Silverstone.

This season the format has been slightly modified – let’s see if the changes are justified. In Imola it is difficult but not impossible to overtake, so I hope we will see the fight on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a lot of points to be earned in the three sprints on Saturday this season and I hope we can get a few of them this weekend.
