Aston Martin got off to a great start to last season, with Fernando Alonso finishing on the podium six times in the opening eight races of the championship. Unsurprisingly, a lot is expected of the team in 2024.
At the end of his first season with Aston Martin, Fernando took 4th place in the individual standings, gaining 206 points, surpassing the achievements of other drivers who have competed for the Silverstone team at various times since it became known as Force India exceeds. For Alonso it was Sergio Perez, who scored 125 points in his last season with the team (in 2000 it was already called Racing Point).
Naturally, the team hopes that the AMR24, the new car, will be quite competitive, although this is purely theoretical reasoning until the pre-season testing.
“The most important things in Formula 1 cannot be seen from the outside, but everyone in the team thinks the new car is very good,” Aston Martin F1 ambassador Pedro de la Rosa told Spanish radio station Cadena. Ser. “We tried to eliminate all the weaknesses from last year, and first and foremost we had to ensure that the car worked effectively with a wider range of settings in different conditions and on different circuits.
The aim was to make the car more versatile, and we hope it can now handle all types of trails well.
At the beginning of the season, everyone is actively upgrading their car, but then the picture in the championship stabilizes and everyone finds themselves in one position or another. We have no particular concerns, we liked the car and it worked very reliably during the first introduction at Silverstone. In Bahrain we will see where we stand and how far we have come. Overall, the first half of the season is a very important period.”
42-year-old Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of this year, and it is unclear whether he will stay with the team or move to another team – there are rumors that he could be invited to Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton to replace.
When asked about it, de la Rosa replied: “When the time comes, Fernando will decide whether he wants to continue his career. I hope he wants to stay in Formula 1 for the time being. According to him, he is willing to show loyalty to Aston Martin and will wait for proposals from the team, which is a credit to him.”
