Max Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, has no objection to individual outbursts of anger from his racer, on the contrary, he believes that only maximum sincerity and openness make it possible to succeed…
Gianpiero Lambiase: “The relationship between a driver and his race engineer is based on mutual trust. And when the rider speaks his mind honestly and directly, it means he trusts the team completely.
I know from my own experience that when a driver stops talking honestly about the car’s behaviour, when he tries to avoid some sharp points, the results deteriorate. Max is absolutely straightforward, and so am I – and it makes our job a lot easier.
Some riders want to fully understand the telemetry. Others are not interested at all. Max explains very precisely where he is driving at the limit of the car and what he needs to go faster. Thanks to his guidance, we always know what to do. A rider who can express his thoughts so clearly is a real gift to the team.
He has an incredible sense of racing and an analytical mind. Some riders take their time to get fast, but Max was fast right away. He knows the limits of the car, he knows what needs to be done to make it go faster. That’s why engineers always listen to his comments.
His years of commitment to the team also play a role. He wants to be part of Red Bull for the long term because he believes in us and our work.”
