Pirelli’s tire workers, summarizing in their own way the results of the first day of testing for the season, drew attention to the fact that Max Verstappen, who headed today’s protocol, completed his best lap (1:31.344) for almost an hour and a half . seconds faster than on the first day of testing a year ago.
“Although the results of the test rounds must be taken with some reservations, this is in any case a characteristic sign,” writes the Pirelli Motorsport press service.
Drivers from all teams completed a total of 1,236 laps on Wednesday, a distance of more than 6,689 km, of which more than 4,400 km the teams drove on C3 tires. Next week is the first stage of the season, the Bahrain Grand Prix, and these tires will be the softest available to championship competitors.
Mario Isola, Head of Pirelli Racing: “The day was very interesting and useful. We’ve collected information that helps assess the progress teams have made in developing new cars and understanding the amount of downforce that affects tire behavior.
Additionally, we’ve seen teams take different approaches, and this is especially true for long series of laps. For example, Ferrari and Williams concentrated on working with tires of the same compound and tried to achieve optimal performance by adjusting the settings, while others, including Mercedes and Red Bull, worked with rubber of different compounds.”
