Max Verstappen topped the protocol on the first day of pre-season testing, beating his closest pursuer Lando Norris by more than a second. The reigning world champion completed 142 laps and called the new Red Bull RB20 car competitive.
Max Verstappen (1st): “It’s great to be behind the wheel again. I think we had a good day with a lot of laps. The team is happy because they have been able to do many experiments with the machine.
In the first laps I was surprised how much faster our car was than everyone else. I’m very pleased with how the RB20 responded to changes in settings. She has very good balance. These are just tests, but we had a good first day.
I think our car can be competitive, but we have to get the most out of it. The engineers and I have discussed tomorrow’s program and I look forward to getting back behind the wheel in the afternoon session.”
