James Key: We keep experimenting

James Key, technical director of Kick Sauber, is satisfied with the way the work in the tests is going so far and talked about the program on which the Swiss team’s work is based.

James Key: “Everything is going well and so far we have managed to fully implement all points of the test program. You don’t have to pay attention to the round results; at this stage they mean nothing as we are now mainly concerned with issues of technical reliability.

The first conclusions are as follows: everything is fine with the basic parameters of the machine – fortunately, we have not yet registered any problems that require urgent attention. The second task is to ensure that the car’s aerodynamics work exactly as we expected, that the C44’s behavior on the track matches what we saw in the simulator. And Valtteri confirmed this yesterday, which we were very happy with.

We continue what we started on the first day of testing, trying in every possible way to find out the limits of the machine’s capabilities, adjust the settings, and in some cases this may lead to a reduction in pace – In a word: we actively conduct experiments. But so far the car is generally behaving as it should, and that’s good news.

There is a lot to control because we have significantly revised the design of the car compared to last year’s C43, and changing the concept always adds pressure. I have no doubt that the same can be confirmed with other teams.

I repeat: so far everything is going well, but it is clear that we need to analyze in more detail the operation of the new front suspension, which is based on traction, as well as other parts of the car in which we have made serious design changes.

All this is on our priority list, but we must act gradually, not tackling all the tasks at once, but solving them one by one, step by step. For now we are mainly working with the first version of the machine, but tomorrow we will start testing some technical innovations, and some of them will be noticeable from the outside, but not all. If the correlation is OK today, we can hope that this will also be the case on the last test day. It is on the third day that teams usually prepare for the first race of the season, which will take place on the same track, and also start working on speed.”
