In recent years, Robert Kubica has been Alfa Romeo’s reserve driver and brought title sponsor, the Polish oil company Orlen, to the team. But next year his place will certainly be taken by the young and promising Theo Purscher, a student of the Sauber Academy, who is performing successfully in Formula 2, and Kubica will have to look for another role.
Frederic Vasseur, team leader: “Hopefully we will find another role for Robert, although I have no idea what that will be yet. I trust him. He is not always easy to deal with, but that is normal for a rider.
For Sauber, Robert was one of the main characters, as he won the race with a BMW Sauber in Canada. He spent several years with us, I would like to find a solution to continue the cooperation, but so far I don’t have it.
Kubica is not working with us because he brought a sponsor. Of course it is important to Orlen that Robert is somehow involved and part of the team. But he does a great job, gives reliable feedback – it’s always good for the team to hear a different point of view.
Last year Robert returned behind the wheel of the main car and immediately demonstrated his class. At Zandvoort he only found out on Saturday morning that he would be in the race, and on Sunday he fought ten laps with Vettel and was able to overtake him. It was amazing!”
