The government of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded Michael Schumacher for sporting and social merits, and we wrote about this a month ago, but the state award ceremony itself took place yesterday in Cologne, at the Motorworld center. The seven-time world champion was represented at the ceremony by members of his family.
Hendrik Wüst, head of government of North Rhine-Westphalia, presented it to the wife of the driver Corinne and his daughter Gina. Mick Schumacher was unable to attend as he is busy preparing for the French Grand Prix.
“We pay tribute to Michael Schumacher, a man with a big heart, for whom it was always important to take care of others,” Wüst was quoted as saying by Sky Deutschland. – He was involved in charity work, he was very generous in this regard, but most of the time he tried to do it quietly, without attracting attention. His family continues the work he started.”
The ceremony was also attended by Jean Todt, former Ferrari team principal and ex-FIA president who worked for many years with Michael, one of his family’s closest friends, and Rolf Schumacher, father of the seven-time world champion.
“We would like Michael to receive this award in person, we really miss him,” said Todt. “He has made a major contribution to the development of Formula 1, thanks to him many motorsport enthusiasts have appeared in Germany and this resonance is still felt today.”
