Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz set competitive times during the test in Bahrain. Team leader Frederic Vasseur is cautiously optimistic, but urges people not to jump to conclusions.
Frédéric Vasseur: “In these tests our riders take the first positions, which is better than being at the back, but in reality the results mean nothing. We don’t know what programs the others are using, we don’t know what engine settings they have.
The most important and interesting thing about these tests is that Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc got a feel for the car. They feel comfortable behind the wheel and the car behaves much more stable than last year. This can be considered a good step forward for us.
We had already improved a lot at the end of last season, but this was not enough to fight against Red Bull. In any case, we had a high qualifying pace and in the race we were still inferior, albeit less than in Bahrain and Jeddah at the beginning of 2023. We are going in the right direction, but I don’t know if the progress we have already made will be enough whether to fight Red Bull or not.
You should always be careful about the prognosis after tests, so now you need to stay calm. The most important thing is that we trust our drivers. They give positive feedback, but we still have a lot to do in terms of car development. I think Red Bull still has the advantage. We will continue to attack and next week we will know where we stand.”
