The teams again spent the first hour of the second day of testing gathering information about the cars’ operation, comparing different wing configurations using pressure sensors and then switching to working with tires in long runs.
There were some problems. Perez’s brakes overheated already in the first minutes, the car smoked at the entrance to the pits – we had to hand it over to the mechanics, Sergio lost about half an hour. Alonso lost more than an hour due to a change in the car’s configuration, but this always happens during testing.
Lewis Hamilton tried out the new W15 for the first time – the run-in at Silverstone took place on a wet track and he looked pleased. The day before, his partner George Russell said the car had become much more manageable.
1 hour and 48 minutes before the end of the morning session, red flags appeared for the first time during the tests: the drainage system hatch opened at the entrance to Turn 11. Leclerc complained on the radio that something had scratched the bottom, but after Hamilton passed, the hatch broke completely.
After stopping the session, the marshal – without uniform, but in stride – simply kicked back the lid with his foot. Soon three more came to help. Then the safety car arrived. They brought a welding machine and a grinding machine. The pause continued. More and more people came. Ferrari and Mercedes inspected the underside of Leclerc and Hamilton’s cars returning to the pits for damage – and there was.
As a result, they decided not to continue the session. The second session starts an hour earlier and takes place from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM local time.
