Famen: Mick can only play for Alpine in the WEC

Last week Mick Schumacher was still seen in the paddock of the Bahrain circuit at the Mercedes location, but during the weekend he already put on the uniform of the Alpine team, which is preparing for the start of the WEC season.

At the same time, talk started that Mick could in the future replace one of the two French drivers competing for Alpine in Formula 1, as the contracts of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly expire at the end of 2024. However, Bruno Famen, vice-president of Alpine Motorsport, made it clear that the chance of such a scenario is low.

“As for the issue of the drivers: we are not under pressure,” Famen emphasized in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport. – We are happy with the collaboration with Esteban and Pierre, although we have many more options. Mick is already an Alpine racer.

No one can say for sure when the wave of rumors about upcoming changes in the composition of the teams will flare up again, but after the high-profile news on this subject appeared a few weeks ago, nothing more has happened.”

Famen is of course referring to the news that Lewis Hamilton will move to Ferrari in 2025, which will create a vacancy at Mercedes and Carlos Sainz will have to look for another job.

Alpine also has Jack Douhan in reserve, who will undergo a very intensive testing program in 2024, which suggests that the Renault factory team is mainly dependent on the 21-year-old Australian, the son of the famous Mick Douhan, five-time world champion. champion in circuit racing, motorcycle racing.

“We already have a reserve driver and this is Jack Duane,” Famen emphasizes. “And Mick is a reserve for Mercedes, and our contract with him stipulates that he can only participate in endurance races.”
