David Coulthard is ready to bet on a scenario where Carlos Sainz moves to Sauber, as the Swiss team will soon gain factory status and change its name to Audi.
Next year, Lewis Hamilton will take Sainz’s place at Ferrari, and now everyone is wondering who will be George Russell’s new teammate at Mercedes, and in which team Sainz will continue his career.
According to the Spaniard himself, he plans to hold negotiations “with all the teams to understand who offers the greatest chances of becoming world champions in the future.”
Coulthard, a former Formula 1 driver and now a popular TV commentator, has no doubt that Audi is interested in working with Carlos.
“We are all waiting and want to know where Sainz is going. The safest bet may be on Sauber, which will change to Audi, because it is obvious that his father has close ties to the German company, Coulthard reasoned. “But a contract with Carlos for 2025 could be a perfectly reasonable solution for Mercedes or any other team where a vacancy suddenly arises.
“I don’t rule out the option of working with Red Bull as he already has experience working with this team, although Sergio Perez looks fresh and ready for the challenges ahead.”
We quoted Sainz, who said that on the one hand he would like to have the opportunity to fight for victories next year, on the other hand: “as a change in the regulations in Formula 1 is imminent, we would prefer to focus on a further future.”
In these words you can see the willingness to make a choice in favor of Audi, and even the realization that initially this team will be inferior to the leaders in the championship in terms of competitiveness. In any case, Carlos still has time to think, but for now he has to take care of his first priority: showing good results from the very beginning of the new season to maintain his reputation.
