Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher was awarded the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia – this is the highest honor given to a civilian and is awarded to those who, like Schumacher, were born in this German region and distinguished themselves for their social activities. It is reported by Planetf1.
Schumacher was known as a great philanthropist. He donated 1.5 million euros to the UNESCO Agency for Peace and also financed the construction of a school in Senegal. Bloomberg estimates Schumacher donated at least $50 million to various charities from 2002 to 2006. He also called on the United Nations to recognize road deaths around the world as a major global health issue.
Schumacher suffered a serious head injury in an accident at the end of 2013. His current condition is being kept secret by the Schumacher family.
