No one used the hardest C1 compound on Thursday and wanted to save one or both sets for the race. This scenario was used on this circuit last year…
Simone Berra, Pirelli chief engineer: “An interesting day. We have received the first guidelines regarding the balance of forces, which even takes into account the usual variables: different amounts of fuel in the tanks and operating modes of the power plant.
The teams made almost identical choices, preferring the C2 compound in the first practice session and the C3 compound in the second, when track conditions were similar to those expected in the race and two sets of C1 tires were saved for the rest of the weekend.
The long runs in the second session were almost all done on C3, proving that even the softest compound is effective in the long run. As for the C2, we have already seen in the tests that the difference in speed and resources compared to C1 is not so great, but C1 guarantees better stability and will be preferred for the race.”
