George Russell set the third fastest time during qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver is satisfied with the result, but does not expect him to give Max Verstappen a fight in the race.
His teammate Lewis Hamilton qualified ninth and explained his deficit by choosing car settings more suitable for the race.
George Russell (3rd): “Everyone at the base did a fantastic job providing Lewis and me with a car that we were happy with and which formed the basis for further work.
Ultimately, Max is still in the lead and we still have a lot to do to close the gap. But if you look at our qualifying results in Bahrain over the last two years and the race pace, third place is an excellent position going into tomorrow’s race.
We still have a lot of work to do, but we have already made a big step forward in terms of lap speed. I hope this doesn’t come at the expense of race speed.
I think the race will be a very exciting race between everyone and everyone, with the exception of Max Verstappen. Red Bull is very strong at the moment and Max is doing great and has new tires. If there is a chance to fight for the lead, we will do it, but ultimately in the race we will all be fighting for second place.
But no one knows what will happen in the first race of the season. I’m happy to be back behind the wheel and hoping for something different.”
