Of the Williams drivers, only Alex Albon made it to the second qualifying session, who was generally pleased with Friday’s results as they turned out to be slightly better than expected.
Alex Albon (13th): “We’re quite happy – I think we’ve moved up two positions higher than we expected. Although I can’t say I was completely satisfied with the way I worked – considering you were only a tenth away from the last session, it seems like you could have added a little more.
I think we can be happy with the results of the first qualifying of the year, but there is also reason for some disappointment: we know our car has potential, but we haven’t been able to deliver on it yet. To make this possible we need a little more time. But the positive is that this potential exists, and it’s important to simply learn how to unlock it.
It’s still difficult to talk about the race. There are five teams ahead of us, whose cars will allow us to do well in both qualifying and the races. Not one of them has any problems with race pace, and in any case their pace is faster than ours.
But this is the first Grand Prix of the season and I think there is a good chance he will retire. I believe our direct competitors tomorrow will be the Visa RB riders, and if we get to the finish line it is likely we can qualify for points.
Logan Sargent (18th): “The first attempt in the first session was quite successful, but the second one didn’t turn out so well. I didn’t have enough time until the second session and this suggests we have potential, especially as the track conditions improved as the session progressed, already allowing us to complete laps a few tenths faster.
I don’t think I was able to use the rubber effectively on the second attempt – to be honest, I don’t know either: what could have gone wrong between the two attempts? When I got the second set of tires I didn’t feel like I could get the tires up to temperature and therefore the grip was significantly lower.
I’m a little angry, but at least the car has speed. In any case, we understood that the results would be very compact – and so it turned out. It’s hard to say what kind of race pace we’re capable of, but I think I’m doing well in that area and hopefully that will give us an advantage tomorrow.”
