Max Verstappen: Pole comes a bit unexpected

Max Verstappen set the fastest time in the first qualifying session of the season in Bahrain. For the Red Bull Racing driver, this pole was the 33rd of his career. Commenting on the result immediately after the session, Max called it a bit unexpected.

Sergio Perez qualified fifth. The Mexican racer explained the gap to his teammate by saying he had chosen to save a new set of soft tires for the race.

Max Verstappen (1st): “It was a lot of fun. The track has a lot of grip, but the last two days the wind made it difficult to complete a lap. There was a similar picture during qualifying.

In the final it was even more difficult to get everything right, so I’m very happy with pole position. The result was a bit unexpected, but luckily the car turned out fast in qualifying and I was more satisfied with its behaviour.

The battle in the race will also be very exciting. We are in good shape, but we will see what happens tomorrow. I am confident that we can have a strong race.”

Sergio Perez (5th): “It is important to have a good start tomorrow. I think I can do it because I was able to keep a set of soft tires in qualifying. Let’s see which positions we end up in the race.

We decided to save a set of soft tires for the race, so in the final I could only try the new tires once. I hope the decision pays off.”
