70 minutes to go: commentary by George Russell

George Russell will start the race in Bahrain third and is looking forward to the start in good spirits…

George Russell: “An exciting race awaits us, in which at least 8 riders will compete for high results and everyone has approximately equal chances. Events on the circuit in Bahrain can develop according to any scenario; due to the severe wear on the tires, two pit stops are very likely, and besides, I can’t remember such cool weather here at all.

Everyone is wearing jackets, although it seems like in the Middle East it should be hot and everyone will be sweating, but now the picture is different, new to all of us. If you are interested in my realistic prediction, we will only be able to fight for second or third place, and I believe many can claim it – from Charles Leclerc to Lewis Hamilton, who will start ninth.

Of course, Max Verstappen will start the Bahrain Grand Prix from pole; he won almost all the races last season and was ahead again in qualifying yesterday, and the race pace of the Red Bull car is even better than its speed in qualifying. Of course, we will do our best, and if the opportunity arises to come forward, we will definitely take it. But again, the reality is that we are destined to fight only for second place.

Although I am happy that the Mercedes car is really good for the first time in two years, and Lewis and I are happy with the pace it is capable of, we have not yet been able to realize its full potential. In any case, it will be very interesting how everything goes in the first corner of the first race of the season and now everyone is in a good mood!”
