McLaren admitted he made a mistake in choosing Piastri’s tactics

Lewis Hamilton moved ahead of Oscar Piastri through tactics and the McLaren team admitted they had made a mistake by not inviting the Australian to the pits for a new set of hard tires a lap earlier.

Hamilton was 8th behind Piastri for his second pit stop, but was given fresh tires on lap 33, after which he was able to stay ahead of the McLaren driver in the opening corners of lap 34, when he left the pits on cold tires. and eventually finished seventh, one position above Oscar.

“We should have acted differently, but we didn’t and now we have to analyze everything,” said Andrea Stella after the finish, answering the question of whether it would have been better to call Piastri into the pits a lap earlier.

The Australian driver agrees: “I think there were several situations during the race where we should have done better in terms of tactics and timing of pit stops. I think the moment (when Hamilton successfully overtook) was more acute than we would like, and of course we lost our position.

I tried to do everything I could to stay ahead, but immediately after leaving the pits the hard tires no longer held the track at all. Then I tried to fight Lewis, but I overheated the tires and it took some time for their effectiveness to recover.

These tires are very sensitive to temperature changes and you can end up paying for them for the entire distance. However, I think Hamilton, even when he was behind, showed good speed.

I think we had a normal pace closer to the finish, but to be honest I think Lewis was a little faster over the entire distance of the Grand Prix.”
