Mercedes head Toto Wolff commented on the team’s performance in the first phase of the season in Bahrain and spoke about plans for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Toto Wolff: “Disappointing is the best word to describe our race in Bahrain.” We hoped for better results given the speed in training and qualifying. Both drivers were satisfied at the start of the weekend with the balance of the car and the more stable performance of the W15.
Unfortunately, the car’s cooling system did not function as expected on Saturday evening. As a result, we had to switch to a controlled pace mode quite early, which led to a drop in tire temperature below optimal values. For this reason, its true potential could not be demonstrated. A disappointing start to the season, but the team will draw conclusions.
We have the opportunity to take an immediate step forward in Jeddah on a fast-track urban trajectory. We will continue to study the characteristics of the car on the track, which is radically different from Sakhir. We are trying to have a more consistent weekend and understand our true speed against our opponents.
It is also great that Saudi Arabia will host the first round of the F1 Academy season as a preliminary race. This is the first time our team is participating in this series. We look forward to seeing our young protégé Doriana Pen in action and will be supporting the series throughout the year.”
