Watanabe: Results are expected from Tsunoda this season

During the race in Bahrain, Yuki Tsunoda actively argued with the team, who asked to let Daniel Ricciardo go ahead, and after the finish he almost collided with his partner. Honda Racing Corporation president Koiji Watanabe said Red Bull expects results from the Japanese driver this season and added that he is not guaranteed a contract before 2025.

Koiji Watanabe: “We will continue to work with Red Bull until the end of 2025 and if Yuki proves he is a driver who can win, they will want him in the team.

In regular meetings at Red Bull I am told that Yuki’s prospects depend on his results this year. They have high expectations of him. I think Yuki should be on the podium.

Of course, they didn’t say the word ‘podium’, but if a driver expects to compete in a leading team, he must demonstrate such a level. I think Yuki can do it.”

Honda will become the powertrain supplier to the Aston Martin team in 2026. Watanabe added that this fact does not guarantee Tsunoda’s continuation of his career in Formula 1: “I told Yuki to behave according to his program and not concentrate on Honda. The fact that we will be working with Aston Martin in 2026 does not mean that the Honda driver will go to Aston Martin.

It is important that the riders we support achieve success, regardless of which team they compete for. But of course it would be great if we achieved success as one team.”
