Fernando Alonso commented in his own way in the paddock of the Jeddah circuit on the rumors about the possible departure of Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing.
He questioned Verstappen’s version of negotiations with Mercedes: “There have been a lot of rumors in the last two, three months, it’s hard to believe everything. You have to ask Max this, but if this happens, I think I can also get on the Red Bull list, because I don’t have a contract for next year yet.”
As Spanish newspaper Marca highlights, the two-time champion said this even before Verstappen said he had no reason to leave the team with which he achieved so much success.
By the way, Alonso added a few more words with a downright ironic intonation: “It is better to be on the Red Bull list than on some other lists, for example among those who are preparing to retire. “
Fernando also called the switch to Aston Martin of such a specialist as Bob Bell, whom he has known since the time he played for Renault, good news: “In those two years that I won two world championships with this team, Bob was still in a role, but I hope he will help take Aston Martin to the next level. I’m glad he’s coming, it’s always good when a team has a lot of great professionals.”
Regarding the balance of power this weekend, Alonso said the following: “In Jeddah I don’t expect any particular changes compared to Bahrain, because last year there were certain similarities between the first two stages of the season. Red Bull is still ahead, but McLaren will probably be able to do a little better in Jeddah as their car can handle the high-speed corners well.
We already said in the winter that Red Bull and Ferrari would start the season better than the rest. This is exactly what happened in Bahrain, although it seems to have taken many by surprise. Personally, I am surprised that such results can come as a surprise to anyone.”
