On Thursday in Jeddah, riders worked hard with three rubber compounds, facing granulation from softer tires…
Simone Berra, Pirelli chief engineer: “An interesting day when it comes to assessing tire performance. The C2 compound worked very well: it is the best tire for the race because of its low wear and high stability.
The C3 and C4 tires are granulated, which is quite predictable on this track, but the tarmac will gradually become covered with waste rubber and this effect will diminish.
Most teams opted for C3 for long series of laps and races, but there were also teams that simulated the first stage of the race on C4, so this option cannot be ruled out.
We will likely see a one-stop strategy on Saturday, where the benefit of the extra grip that the softest compound can provide in the early or final laps could be a big factor.”
