Mercedes prepared new items for the French Grand Prix, hoping to regain the gap, but lost even more than before. Both riders admitted things didn’t go as well as they had hoped.
George Russell (4th): “On Friday we were more competitive in the long distance than with a little fuel. On Saturday we need to focus on preparing for qualifying so that there are no middle group drivers between us and the top four cars at the start of the race.
Obviously the Ferrari cars are faster than us and Max looks very cool as always. Well, we still have work to do. On Friday we lost more than expected, but at night we work both here and at the base. Never say never”.
Lewis Hamilton (5th): “There is still a lot of work to be done. On Friday, the car did not impress so quickly. We don’t know why. I hope tonight we come up with something that will allow us to take a step forward – and tomorrow we will go faster.
We need to dig into the telemetry, but so far there is a feeling that our biggest problem is the lack of downforce. Everything else is more or less okay.
One can only sympathize with the teams that are more inferior than ours. Machines of this generation are not as efficient as last year – in terms of downforce and grip. But this is their first season. I’m sure it will get better with age.”
