Alonso: Let’s see what the race pace will be

Fernando Alonso qualified fourth in Jeddah, behind Red Bull Racing and Charles Leclerc. The Aston Martin driver is satisfied with the result, but does not give a 100% guarantee that he can compete for the podium in the race.

His partner Lance Stroll showed the tenth fastest time and said he had problems with the car in the final, the cause of which has yet to be determined.

Fernando Alonso (4th): “The strong performance during qualifying in Jeddah was a pleasant surprise. We are very competitive in one lap and the car drives great in qualifying.

Today I enjoyed every round. In the decisive run in the final I was behind Lewis Hamilton in the slipstream on the straight, but then lost tenth place in the first corner, which made up for the win.

A good result for Aston Martin, but the real test awaits us in the race. We have to keep our feet firmly on the ground, we will see what our race pace will be.”

Lance walk (10th): “The first part of qualifying went very positively, but in the final I had problems – I have to find out the reason. On my last lap of the final the car was difficult to drive and I lost time in sector three, which is mainly straights.

We need to find out why we couldn’t improve after the first session – we were in much better shape at the start of qualifying than at the end.

Let’s see what we can do tomorrow. There is a long race ahead with serious tire degradation, so there will still be opportunities.”
