For the third year now, Mercedes has been trying to solve the problem with the car’s strong sway on the straights, but it happens again and again…
Lewis Hamilton (8th): “Everything is exactly the same as previous years. There are a lot of new things in this car that help us a lot, but the swing really hinders us – in the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth corners. We haven’t been able to fix it yet.
At night we made some changes, during the day the car behaved much better, I was confident, but in qualifying it disappeared again.
But George did a great job. He feels much more comfortable in the car, just like in recent years. But we don’t bow our heads and keep working. I understand a little better where these problems come from and will try to solve them with the team.
We tried all the settings changes but couldn’t get rid of the wobble. It was also in Bahrain, but not as intense as here. In the first sector at high speed, the car loses stability. As a machine rises and falls, the balance shifts fore and aft. This needs to be resolved. The problem is already three years old. We have to beat her.”
George Russell (7th): “Unfortunately I couldn’t set the best lap on the new tires. I did my fastest lap on the rolled laps and that was really excellent.
I think I could have been fifth or fourth, but I made a mistake and I can only blame myself. It’s a bit disappointing, but the battle is very fierce, just like last week in Bahrain. To have a great lap you have to have everything together, and we are still trying to understand this car.
I am convinced that our race pace is better than that of our competitors. I think we are the fastest on the straight, but the track is difficult, so we will see how everything goes tomorrow.”
