The situation in the Red Bull camp remains difficult and the level of division continues to grow. We have already said, citing Austrian sources, that Helmut Marko could be suspended from work, but Max Verstappen has actually demanded that he remain in the team.
This is what the 80-year-old Red Bull motorsport consultant himself said about it on Sky Deutschland on Friday evening: “There are a lot of rumours, and I don’t want to discuss them at all. Another interview awaits me tomorrow, and then we’ll see what happens next. But I repeat: if I want to continue working here, the situation must return to normal.”
These words alone suggest that the contradictions within Red Bull are approaching a critical point. Presumably the conversation Marco mentioned was a meeting with Oliver Mintzlaff, who is responsible for all sports programming for the Austrian company.
Ralf Schumacher, who works as an expert with Sky Deutschland, gave his opinion on what happened: “Who could have expected such a development of events? To answer this question we will have to go back to the recent past. I know who expected something like this, but unfortunately this person is no longer with us. Dietrich Mateschitz made plans to sell 50% of the shares of the Porsche team, precisely because he foresaw it all.
In my opinion, Helmut Marko can only be angry with himself now, because he was once involved in that project and could have brought it to an end. In this case, the situation would now be completely different. But now the entire structure of Red Bull is cracked.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to be in this team if Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, suddenly can’t appear in it anymore and Marco also has to leave. I think that would be wrong. It is time for all parties to the conflict to sit at the negotiating table. But at the center of this story is one man, Christian Horner, who started it all, as he strives to use all his power to maintain complete control of the team. And it’s impossible to say for sure whether this will help matters.”
