American Logan Sargent, who will race in Formula 2 for the Carlin team this year, is racing with increasing confidence, taking two wins in the final two stages at Silverstone and Spielberg, and winning qualifying at Le Castellet yesterday.
Thanks to these successes, he climbed to the second line of the individual standings, ahead of Theo Purcher, and only Felipe Drugovic is ahead of him. Although the Brazilian’s advantage is 37 points, it can be overcome with successful event development.
At the same time, Sargent was admitted to Williams Racing Academy this year and his performances in the youth series put the Grove team in a difficult position. It is rumored that Williams wants to replace Nicholas Latifi with Oscar Piastri, last year’s F2 champion who is Alpine’s reserve driver this season.
Apparently Williams leadership will have to decide who to bet on in the short term – on Piastri, who the French concern’s factory team can only “borrow” for a while, or on Sargent, who has a long-term contract with Willems.
“Solving this problem can cause serious headaches, don’t you think? — this is how Yost Capito, the team leader, responded when asked about the potential prospects for Logan. “However, I have faced more complex issues.
We are of course impressed with how he is spending his first full season in Formula 2 and are not putting any pressure on him so that he has time to develop professionally. We are impressed with how quickly he has adapted to the car, how he handles rubber and what results he is showing.
The way he won pole yesterday also made a big impression on us and I am absolutely convinced that he will drive a Formula 1 car in the future.”
Capito also indicated that the Williams would give Sargent the chance to hold one of their Friday practice sessions this year. But the question remains whether the 21-year-old driver from Florida has a chance to make his Formula 1 debut as early as 2023.
It seems that at this stage of the season, Piastri’s candidacy would be preferable to Williams, but in this case the team would have to agree to Alpine’s terms and sign a contract with the Australian for only one year, a maximum of two.
“I’m willing to lend the Oscar to any team because I’m taking it back,” said Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi. “We invested a lot in Oscar, we believe him, that’s why he became our reserve pilot. He is a promising pilot and we would like his talent to be fully revealed.
Therefore, as has already happened with many other racers, he can debut in another team, learn everything it takes and then return to us. It would be a good scenario.”
Capito confirmed that Williams is also considering this scenario: “We have several options, and this is one that we are also thinking about. Ultimately, we will do what we need, based on the interests of the team. But it is too early to talk about it, the time has not yet come.
