In France, Mario Isola spoke about the tire development process for the 2023 season. The head of the Pirelli racing division said the main changes will affect the front tyres, whose design will be modified to resist understeer in slow corners.
Mario Isola: “The tests in Austria were positive. We have almost decided on the design of the front and rear tires for next season. We took into account that the cars have become faster, so we tried to change the design so that too much pressure acts on the tires.
I already mentioned that we focus on strengthening the structure of the front tire. This is because modern cars are more prone to understeer in slow corners. Unfortunately, we couldn’t predict this behavior by working with transition machines last year. We try to achieve a better balance between the front and rear tires.
The rear tires are very strong and provide good grip under acceleration, so we don’t plan to make any major changes to the design. But we have a few ideas about setups.
Now we are waiting for the tests in Budapest, and then another test day in Monza with Red Bull after the Grand Prix. We’ve almost decided on tire design for next year. During the tests in the second half of the season, the emphasis will be on rubber compounds.
