In Jeddah, Charles Leclerc spoke about the last race and the car’s weaknesses…
Question: Charles, how was your race?
Charles Leclerc: I did everything I could. Unfortunately, problems arose at the beginning of each segment: it was impossible to get the tires into working mode. Usually the car drives better at the end of the segment, but in Jeddah we didn’t see this effect at Mediun, and at Hard it appeared so late that we didn’t have time to recoup.
Overall a positive race. We are taking small steps in the right direction. Our team has improved the most over the past six to seven months and we are slowly closing the gap. The gap is still wide. But if we continue to work in the same spirit, sooner or later we will be able to put more pressure on Red Bull.
Q: Tell us about the fight with Perez – first at the start, and then about how he got ahead of you in the fourth round…
Charles Leclerc: At the start I still remember the exit of the second corner, where I thought: “I hope he leaves me room.” He did, so I kept second position. But I don’t really remember his overtaking. But everything went fine there, I couldn’t do anything.
Today it was difficult for us to attack and defend. We were inferior to many in terms of speed on the straights.
Q: Given the progress you’ve made in Jeddah, are you planning to take the next step in Melbourne in two weeks?
Charles Leclerc: I don’t think there will be any new products in Melbourne, but we will try to get more out of the car. We’ll see when we get new items ready. I hope they can close the gap with Red Bull.
Q: Say a few words about your young partner, Oliver Berman. How difficult was it for him?
Charles Leclerc: Incredibly difficult. But he made a great impression. I think everyone saw it. We worked side by side and I was impressed by his calmness in this difficult situation. He showed the entire paddock what he is capable of. It’s only a matter of time before we see him as one of the most important Formula 1 drivers.
