In 2014, the FIA introduced a system of penalty points for drivers involved in incidents or who broke the rules. If a driver achieves 12 points within 12 months, he will be disqualified from participating in the race. Penalty points expire 12 months after collection.
The leader in the number of penalty points over the past twelve months is Sergio Perez.
