Fernando Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the season. In February, the Spaniard said his priority was to extend his contract with the team, but the mood has since changed. Now he is ready to perform only behind the wheel of a car that can win.
Fernando Alonso: “Am I on the list of Mercedes candidates. I hope so. It is better to be on this list than on the lists of other series or to retire.”
I will decide on future plans in the coming weeks. First of all, I need to talk to myself to understand whether I want to take on new responsibilities. I have to sacrifice everything else in life to be 100% ready for Formula 1. This will be the first, my personal decision.
First of all I have to find out if I want to keep racing. I would be selfish if I decided to just extend my contract, stay in Formula 1, travel the world and feel cool. But I’m not that kind of person. If I make a commitment it is because I truly believe I can win races.
I want to work in the simulator, communicate with the engineers, I want to be sure that the team will give 100%, just like I will give 100%. If not, I will not take on any new responsibilities.
I don’t know for how long, I don’t know with whom. There are many questions. But this is the second phase. The first will be my personal decision.”
