Alain Prost was nicknamed “The Professor” for his calculated and controlled approach to racing, which contrasted with the flamboyant style of the emotional Ayrton Senna.
In an interview with Speedweek, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri said his style is more similar to Prost’s.
Oscar Piastri: “I would say my style is close to Prost’s. With as much downforce as our cars have, they have to be driven very conservatively, and the tires don’t like to slide sideways. I have to constantly adapt – and this is one of my strengths.
All the youth series cars I drove had very different characteristics. I think the Formula 2 car suits me best. In Formula 1 I like some qualities, others I don’t, but you have to be able to work with them.
Last year I gradually picked up the pace as the weekend progressed and I gained experience.
During qualifying you have the highest grip and lowest fuel levels – the best conditions you can have, which can mask some of the driving problems you have. And last year I felt most comfortable during qualifying, despite the high pressure.
As the season progressed, the work plan was adjusted. The only thing against me was a large number of new tracks.
In general, fast tracks suit me better. But this doesn’t mean that all fast turns are good and slow turns are bad. In 2023 there were fast corners where I struggled and slow corners where I was strong.”
