Lando Norris set the 5th fastest time in qualifying for the French round of the championship and after such a round he says he thinks he deserves pole position. Daniel Ricciardo, his McLaren teammate, finished 11th in the final standings. Although the Australian did not qualify for the final session, he also called the result positive.
Lando Norris (5th): “Very good day. Before qualifying we wondered if we would make it to the final, because we were too behind in terms of speed. In general I am satisfied: I want to say that my lap in the last session was really good.
After such a lap it seems like I should be on pole! I think in other categories I would be surprised if I missed pole position, but today I still missed more than a second. In any case, the team did a good job and tried to squeeze everything out of the car, so in tomorrow’s race we will start from the best position that we can alone.
Daniel Riccardo (11th): “I think the result is positive, but we need to analyze my lap in detail to understand why I couldn’t achieve what I wanted in some parts of the route. And yet I think overall we have made a step forward.
In some corners our car did well, in others – not in the best way. In general there are some improvements, but on some parts of the track I had problems: when I tried to attack to regain a few tenths I didn’t feel the MCL36 behaved the way I wanted.
But for example in corners like 1st or 2nd one felt that the car was already generating more downforce. So there are some positives, but her behavior in other corners is puzzling and there is still work to be done.”
