Ferrari has three reserve drivers for 2024: Antonio Giovinazzi, Robert Schwartzman and Oliver Berman. In Jeddah the team needed a replacement for Carlos Sainz and Berman took over the wheel instead of the experienced Giovinazzi or Schwartzman. The head of the Scuderia, Frederic Vasseur, explained the reasons for this choice.
“I made a decision in the winter,” Wasser said in Jeddah. “Last year it seemed a bit silly to ask Antonio to join us for 22 or 24 races as he was involved in our endurance racing program at the same time.
Participating in the FIA WEC is very important for Ferrari and requires a huge effort, so I didn’t want to ask Antonio or Robert Schwartzman to join us in Jeddah just a week after their round in Qatar.
We decided that on the stages where Oliver would in any case be present [для выступлений в Формуле 2]he will be our reserve driver and work on the simulator for the remaining races.”
For example, Oliver Berman will again be the reserve driver in the next round in Melbourne and Antonio Giovinazzi will fly to Suzuka with Ferrari. Vasser did not say in which stages Shvartsman would be the reserve driver.
