Daniel Ricciardo has repeatedly said that he wants to perform well this year and return to Red Bull Racing in 2025. However, in the first two qualifying rounds of the season, the Australian lost to his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, and during the race in Jeddah the car spun.
Former Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan believes that if Ricciardo doesn’t get his act together and start showing results, he could be out of contract altogether.
Eddie Jordan: “I don’t think there is a bigger favorite in Formula 1 than Daniel. He definitely has the best smile I’ve ever seen in the championship. Every team needs such a driver, but a smile alone is not enough to qualify for a place behind the wheel.
Towards the end of his time at McLaren he lost his excellent qualities, and I can’t understand exactly how this happened. Since then, Daniel has not shown anything that would make me as a sponsor want to pay for his contract.
Ricciardo needs results more than anyone, but he cannot demonstrate them. If there are no results, he will simply be replaced, and he must understand this. What I mean is that Daniel can’t afford to spin his car during a race or waste time during a pit stop. This is something you won’t see with Max Verstappen or other drivers.
As much as we love Daniel, and he is certainly a huge asset to Formula 1, the stopwatch never lies, and in Ricciardo’s case the stopwatch leaves a lot of questions.
When everyone sees the result in Oliver Berman’s debut race, drivers like Daniel Ricciardo will have to look back and ask themselves: “How much time do I have left in Formula 1?”
