Max Verstappen: Our car is fast, but Charles was unlucky

Max Verstappen won the French Grand Prix and climbed to the top step of the podium for the seventh time this season. Thanks to his success and the retirement of Charles Leclerc, the Red Bull Racing driver’s lead in the individual standings has grown to 63 points.

Max Verstappen: “After the start I had a good pace and I pushed Charles under pressure. However, if you’re closely chasing an opponent on this track, the tires get really overheated, especially in such heat, so I couldn’t overtake – I only had one chance to try in Turn 11.

I tried to stay calm and not let him go too far. I went to the pits a little earlier, but after that we didn’t know how the events in the race would develop.

The car was fast, but Charles had bad luck, of course. Hope he’s okay. After his retirement I ran my race and checked the condition of the tires. The pit lane on this track is very long, so we couldn’t make another pit stop – we had to stay on the track. The tires were very worn, so the task was to monitor their condition and make it to the finish.

At each stage I try to earn as many points as possible. At some point, taking a wait-and-see attitude in the hope of an opportunity – that’s what I did. There are still a lot of races before the end of the season, so it’s important to earn points. From this point of view we had a great day.

We have to make the car faster in a fast lap, so we keep working.”
