Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and multiple Grand Slam tennis winner Serena Williams are among the contenders for the purchase of football club Chelsea.
The athletes have each contributed £10 million to a consortium of investors led by former Liverpool president Martin Broughton. Sources close to the consortium claim that negotiations with Hamilton and Williams have been underway for several weeks.
The presence of Lewis and Serena among the investors is believed to increase the Broughton consortium’s chances of buying, as Hamilton and Williams have a strong track record of building global sports brands. Two other applicants for the Chelsea purchase are American businessmen Todd Boeli and Stephen Palyuka.
Interestingly, Lewis Hamilton has been a fan of another London football club – Arsenal since childhood, and even dated the team’s players on the field.
