Fans are already accustomed to the fact that races on Middle Eastern circuits take place in the dark, although this was successfully tested for the first time in the Far East – in Singapore. The debut race in Las Vegas was also held under floodlights, but such experience does not yet exist in Europe. But it is entirely possible that he will appear in a few years, when the Grand Prix moves from Spain to Madrid.
Representatives of the promoter of the future race in the Spanish capital, scheduled for 2026, visited a recent stage in Saudi Arabia, where they studied in detail the experience of holding motorsport competitions in the dark under artificial lighting conditions.
This is a task of increasing complexity, as it is necessary to ensure uninterrupted power supply, provide sufficient reserve capacity, organize electrical networks that meet modern standards and install lighting equipment along the 5.5 km route.
According to Marca, unconfirmed reports indicate that the Madrid race is scheduled for September 2026 and there is not much time left for preparation. Of course, a city race in the dark is an impressive spectacle, and this has been tested more than once, but it inevitably costs the organizers a lot. Let’s see if the organizers of the new Spanish Grand Prix can afford it.
According to the Spanish newspaper, the initiators of the race for the capital (although this is also not confirmed) have already agreed on joint financing with the Madrid Chamber of Commerce. It is possible that Liberty Media, as well as the Mexican company Oseca, active in the entertainment industry, will join the project. However, there are also rumors that in Madrid they will call on the successful experience of the promoters of the Dutch Grand Prix, who have managed to organize an interesting cultural program that accompanies the race weekend in Zandvoort.
