Former Formula 1 driver and commentator Johnny Herbert is surprised that Mercedes cannot solve the problems with the car for the third year in a row…
Johnny Herbert: “When Mercedes came up with the minimal pontoon concept a few years ago, I liked it. The car was packed tightly and looked great, but suffered from swaying.
By the end of the season the influence had waned and they said, “We know what needs to be improved,” but next year’s car had the same problem. They then prepared an update, which seemed to work, but this year the buildup occurred again.
This is already the third season where nothing works out for them, they just run in circles.
The question is: can Mercedes make a difference in the future? This may not happen until 2026. Serious changes to the regulations could help, but there are doubts: they wouldn’t be able to cope in three years; at the end of the season they will lose Lewis, who has always been very helpful in solving problems with the car. Over the past year they have changed a lot on the car, but still not able to change the situation.
This worries them because their rivals are making progress against their backdrop. Ferrari has clearly improved, McLaren is going faster than in 2023 and Mercedes only finished seventh and ninth in Jeddah. This is a bad sign.”
