Wolff: We achieved the maximum result

At the end of the race in Paul Ricard, for the first time in the season, both Mercedes drivers climbed to the podium…

Toto Wolff, Team Principal: “Today the team and the riders did a great job. We have achieved the best possible result. George was smart and fast, and Lewis fought like a lion. Hamilton constantly motivates the team, maintains a positive attitude even on such unsuccessful days as yesterday, and is always charged to fight.

Unfortunately our car won’t allow us to fight with the teams that are now ahead – we are six to seven tenths behind the leaders in the lap. In qualifying it is not possible to bring the tires into the working range for the fast lap, in the race we lose time in the first segment because of this, but when the rubber condition stabilizes we don’t look too bad.

There is a lot of work to be done, but I believe in our specialists. Today we saw great teamwork on the track and at the base. We’re going in the right direction.”

Lewis Hamilton (2nd): “Given the large backlog during the weekend and the missing of the first practice, we achieved an excellent result. I didn’t expect to be able to fight for second place or a podium, but today everything worked out.

The car is reliable, the team is gradually making its way to the top. So far we don’t have a speed like the two strongest teams, but today we were able to fight one of them. I am grateful to all our employees. George did a great job too.”

George Russell (3rd): “Long and difficult flight. Today we had a good pace, at the restart everyone had trouble warming up the tires but I managed to overtake Perez. I was happy to see the finish flag and earn points for third place.

We are gradually making progress, but it is important to improve our results in qualifying. We know we are having problems with the tires warming up, they reappeared on the restart, but we are working on it.

We are doing everything we can to improve the car’s performance, we are confident we are on the right track – and look forward to the next races, hoping for further progress. Thanks to everyone at the Brackley and Brixworth bases for their hard work and dedication.”
