The sports prototype of the Porsche 910, which Niki Lauda once drove, is being auctioned and the unique car is asking for 2.2 million dollars.
The legendary Austrian’s name is usually associated with Formula 1, especially with teams like Ferrari, Brabham and McLaren, but in fact the list of cars linked to Lauda’s memory is quite long.
For example, last summer we wrote about the Mercedes-Benz 190 E in a special Nürburgring configuration, behind the wheel of which the three-time world champion spent only one race, but still there was such a page in his sports biography.
The Porsche in question was also driven by Lauda in just one race, and that was in 1969, a few years before he made his Formula 1 debut.
The race was called the 1000 km Zeltweg and took place on the circuit we now know as the Red Bull Ring. 20-year-old Niki Lauda drove for the Austrian Bosch Racing Team and his partner was Otto Stuppacher, also an Austrian. .
By the way, Helmut Marko also started in the same race in the same Porsche sports prototype, and his team took 8th place in the overall standings and first in its class. Lauda and his partner were much less lucky; they were classified in penultimate place, 21st place (9th place in class), but that’s another story.
Now the 1966 Porsche 910 can be purchased at an auction held by the American company Motor Classic & Competition Corp. The auction organizers separately emphasize what makes the car unique, and this is not just the fact that it was once driven by Lauda, although this is the most important thing. The fact is that with this began the production of sports prototypes of the 910 series, the serial number is 001. And a total of 29 copies were produced.
The car was equipped with a 220 hp six-cylinder engine, which accelerated it to speeds of more than 270 km/h; the body parts were made of fiberglass, which was common at the time. But the body was very light and mounted on a durable tubular chassis.
This car has competed in 250 endurance races since 1966 and has won several victories. In 1994 it was purchased by a private collector, underwent a careful restoration and is now virtually in its original form. Interest in various types of car rarities is high these days, and there is no doubt that the historic sports prototype, in which Niki Lauda once raced, will find a new owner.
