Helmut Marko: We came to Australia with optimism

In an interview with OE24, Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko spoke about the upcoming Australian Grand Prix…

Q: What results do you expect in Melbourne?
Helmut Marko: I hope for another victory. This year we did two races on two completely different tracks, and our car was successful on both. So we came to Australia with optimism.

Question: Will Red Bull – or even Max Verstappen – win every race this year?
Helmut Marko: Wait a second. Of the 24 races, only two took place. The qualifying results were very tight and only Max’s excellent laps allowed him to win pole position twice. When we get to circuits like Monaco or Singapore, where overtaking is very difficult, it becomes a completely different story. In any case, I wouldn’t bet on our 24 wins.

Question: You said that 18-year-old Berman made life difficult for Ferrari with his strong debut…
Helmut Marko: They bought Hamilton for a lot of money and signed a long-term contract with Leclerc. Next year I would send Berman to a smaller team, like Haas F1. A year of studying never hurt anyone, and it eases the pressure.

Q: What about the move to RB?
Helmut Marko: We had a meaningful conversation with him, but by then he was already supporting the Ferrari Academy. It is impossible to imagine that we are preparing him for Ferrari.

Question: If rumors are to be believed, there may be a vacancy at Red Bull Racing. Has Max Verstappen spoken to you about a possible switch to Mercedes?
Helmut Marko: These are internal problems. Don’t expect an answer from me.
