Hamilton: We haven’t fully figured out the new car yet

Lewis Hamilton has had a poor start to his final season at Mercedes and has only 8 points to his name after two races of the season. And although he admits that it will not be easy to overtake Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing, he still believes that he and the team can still win back.

Lewis Hamilton: “I really think we have a great car with a lot of potential, but we haven’t been able to fully realize it yet. The bottom line is that we are dissatisfied with the results of the first two races of the season, also because we have not yet fully understood the characteristics of our new car.

We have a huge amount of work to do, but let’s hope we can handle it. However, when it comes to the handling of the car as a whole, we have already managed to achieve noticeable improvements.

The feeling of pilots is already much better, but certain actions we take can have both positive results and the opposite effect.

However, I believe the team is still focused on fighting for wins. You have to ignore the fact that Max Verstappen has almost 50 points more than me. The season is long and a lot can still change, although it will be very difficult to catch up with the Red Bull boys.”

The seven-time world champion also expressed her support for Susie Wolff, who is suing the FIA over allegations made against her in December last year that she considers defamatory.

“First of all, I am incredibly proud of Susie, she is very brave, she stands up for the right values and she is a very good leader,” Hamilton said. “In a world where people often prefer to remain silent, she has made a very important statement by showing herself and seizing the opportunity.

I like that she has chosen to draw attention to this situation by going to court, because in our sport everything is very opaque, including the FIA. Many things happen behind closed doors, there is no public reporting. And if this is not the case, where does the confidence in what is happening in Formula 1 come from?

Hopefully, with Susie taking this stand, we will see positive changes. We live in a time where filing a complaint can lead to dismissal. This is terrible, and when we talk about the need to make our sport more diverse, we must stand up for its core values.”
