On Thursday, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz said he would assess his well-being after Friday’s practice sessions and make a decision together with the FIA on whether to take part in the race.
Carlos missed the race in Jeddah – having his appendix removed less than two weeks after surgery, but he is ready to get behind the wheel in Melbourne. If any problems arise, he will be replaced again by Oliver Berman.
Carlos Sainz: “I am confident that I can get into the car tomorrow and show a good result. When I got home, I developed a rehabilitation plan to prepare for this race. Tomorrow I’m going to drive. We’ll see how I feel, but I’m positive.
Am I 100% ready? Of course not. 100% is 10 days of training, working on a simulator, and I didn’t do that, with the emphasis on recovery after surgery.
Will I be ready for the race? Now I think so, but tomorrow we’ll see how I feel. For now I feel like I can participate in the race. But I won’t do anything stupid. If I don’t feel good tomorrow, I’ll be the first to raise my hand and say I need two more weeks before my next race.
Tomorrow I have another check at the FIA. They monitor my progress. I’m the first person who doesn’t want to experience pain or suffer, so as not to make things worse. I will be honest about how I feel.”
