At the FIA press conference in Melbourne, Esteban Ocon was reminded of his words last year when he expressed fears that driving the Alpine A524 would not bring him much pleasure.
“Were your fears confirmed, or has it gotten worse?” – asked David Croft, commentator for the British TV channel Sky Sports F1.
“Thanks for the question! – Esteban replied with a sarcastic grin. “Of course we understand the situation we are in.” No one in our team likes this situation – I’m talking about everyone who works at the Enstone and Viri bases. There are too many difficulties, but the season will be long and of course we are working hard, trying to improve the car and trying to understand what the problems are.
We are doing everything we can to change this situation, and we hope that we will succeed. Although it is of course much easier to talk about this than to bring about real changes. These will all remain just words until we can solve this problem. But this is exactly the goal our team stands for, and we will not rest until it is achieved.
Everyone in the team is committed to this goal and everyone has a good fighting spirit; that’s the most important thing right now.
There are many problems that bother us, and most of them are related to certain small things. Many things in the car do not work as we would like. But the results are now so compact that all nuances are important. I remember having to start at the very back of the Manor car, but now the difference between the pole time and the Alpine results is much smaller. Therefore, the approaches to solving problems must be different.
We will see throughout the year how we progress, but our goal is to continue to progress.”
