In the final round in Jeddah, Kevin Magnussen, knowing he had to serve two penalties, held off his opponents, giving teammate Nico Hulkenberg the opportunity to open a gap and earn one point for tenth place. In Melbourne, Kevin admitted he wasn’t keen on the strategy, but it was important for Haas to score points.
Kevin Magnussen: “My actions are obviously not ideal from the point of view of fighting in races. The first penalty was a result of my mistake: I misjudged the position on the track and did not leave enough space for Alex Albon.
After that my battle for points was effectively over. But the team saw an opportunity for Niko to finish in the top ten. He had a different strategy and our plan worked. Of course, after such a race I have mixed feelings about my performance, but I am happy that the team earned one point.
Given the intensity of the battle in the middle of the peloton this season, points are very important. It’s good that we succeeded.”
