After the French Grand Prix, Max Verstappen’s lead over Charles Leclerc in the individual classification has grown to 63 points. Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko believes this is not enough to speak with confidence about Max’s chances of the title at the end of the season.
Helmut Marko: “Overtaking turned out to be more difficult than we expected, but the tires held up better than we thought, so at the end of the race it could have been a very close fight. Our “pruning” should have worked, though.
Of course it’s a shame that in such a magnificent confrontation there are technical meetings and mistakes of the riders. At the same time, we are happy with 25 points. The only reason to be upset after the race is Sergio Perez, who missed the restart moment. Sergio’s third place would have completed the team’s outstanding performance.
Max’s advantage in individual competition is not enough. At the Hungaroring we want to be ahead of the competition. After Hungary there are still nine races in which a lot of points have to be played. I think a driver has to win ten to twelve Grands Prix to have a chance at the title.
We are constantly making progress – that is the philosophy of Red Bull Racing. Our car will receive updates in the second half of the season.”
